Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pilates suitable if I have an injury or chronic pain?

Yes, Pilates can help restore the way your body moves, not just in the studio but in everyday life. We recommend starting with a private consultation so we can assess and guide you appropriately. The consultation begins with a postural assessment, a conversation about your goals and ongoing progress tracking. Exercises are carefully regressed or progressed based on each client’s condition. This structured approach helps clients feel safe, supported and confident that their care is intentional and monitored.

I have been advised to undergo a surgery for my knee or spine. How can Pilates help?

Pilates can support you both before and after surgery, depending on your condition and stage of recovery. At ThirdGen Pilates, our focus is on helping you move better, restore support around vulnerable areas and build strength safely. We work with clients preparing for or recovering from procedures, including but not limited to: - Pre- and post-knee replacement - Pre- and post-spinal surgery - Post-cancer surgery - Post-stroke recovery Our approach addresses underlying movement patterns, not just symptoms. Exercises are adapted to your condition and progressed systematically based on your body’s response.

I heard Pilates is good for seniors but my elderly parent has some medical concerns.

Many seniors practise Pilates safely and benefit from it, especially when private teaching is attentive. At ThirdGen Pilates, we work with older adults who want to improve posture, balance, walking confidence and daily movement. Sessions focus on clarity, safety and real-life function, such as getting up from a chair, walking steadily and moving with less strain. For seniors with medical concerns, we usually recommend private or duet sessions so teaching can be closely supervised and tailored. We are happy to discuss your parent’s situation before booking.

I have been doing gym training. How is Pilates different?

Pilates enhances how you move so you can train better in the gym or other forms of exercises. In Pilates, the spine is trained through five ranges of motion: forward bend, extension, side bend, rotation and articulation. This builds mobility, control and stability across your whole body. By strengthening the deeper stabilising muscles that support your spine and joints, Pilates gives you better form and helps to reduce unnecessary strain and prevent overcompensation. Many clients find that they can sustain longer during their exercises. Pilates builds the foundation so your training can go further.

What makes ThirdGen Pilates different from other studios?

What sets us apart is the way we teach. Our teaching is grounded in classical Joseph Pilates principles, informed by current movement science. We focus on organising the body correctly, initiating movement properly and helping you feel the work in the correct places. Our boutique-sized classes allow for close observation and correction. Clients often leave feeling worked yet lighter, clearer, and more at ease.

How do I know which class is right for me?

Choosing the right class depends on your experience level, goals and physical considerations. If you are unsure, feel free to contact us. We are happy to guide you and recommend a suitable starting point based on your needs.

How do I book a private or duet class?

You can book a private or duet class by contacting us directly. Our team will help you decide whether a private, duet or group class is most suitable based on your needs, experience and goals. For clients with pain, injuries or specific concerns, we usually recommend starting with a private consultation.

How big are your group classes?

Our Reformer group classes are intentionally kept small, with up to six participants per class. This allows instructors to give individuals corrections. Small class sizes are an important part of how we teach.

What should I wear to class?

Please wear exercise attire. Grip socks are required and are available for purchase at the studio.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel a class?

We understand that unexpected situations can arise. If you need to reschedule or cancel a class, please inform our Front Desk at least 24 hours in advance. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the scheduled class time will result in the session being forfeited. No refunds, rescheduling or credit reinstatement will be provided. As classes are reserved exclusively for you, teachers schedule their time in advance. Late cancellations affect their confirmed teaching hours and prevent other clients on the waitlist from attending. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
